Campsite 9, Loop A was going to be home for the next four days. Having never been there before, it's always a guessing game when looking at the map trying to find the best place to reserve; our two requirements include not being too close to other campers and being near whatever creek or river is in the park. We nailed it by the way. We instantly started setting up camp as we arrived mid-afternoon since daylight hours are more and more limited in the Fall. He started getting the new wood-burning stove prepared and I started putting up the frame to our new winter camping tent. Within an hour or so we were up and running. The tent was definitely the main attraction at the the campsite and I am thinking we could have charged people to take a tour. "You guys said forget the tent, we are bringing the whole house" - Fellow Camper.
Since we have had a lot of questions about the new set-up, I'll share some info. The tent and stove are both by Guide Gear out of Sportman's Guide. Since we like to camp only in the cooler months, this type of gear is perfect for us. The tent is a 10x12 canvas space which allows for plenty of room for two people and a dog; it gives space for the heater, a seating area, a place for our packs, and a spot to sleep. We do use 30 degree sleeping bags with air mats which helps to soften the ground and keep us warm at night. The stove has a dual purpose. Not only does it heat the tent, it can be used for cooking. Typically we cook over an open fire and still will, but on those really cold mornings where you don't want to worry with a fire for breakfast, it's perfect. A Jet-Boil is also another must-have; great for coffee or boiling hot water for ready made meals or tea. Before you start thinking I am just spoiled by these "amenities", it's still camping; not to be confused with glamping. It takes two people who love nature and dealing with the cold weather, who love being outside, and love working together to have adventures like no other.
You guys, I have to admit, this weekend at Devil's Den was definitely one for the books. The hiking, the nature, the company, and the experience was gold level. Devil's Den is a place everyone should experience 🌲
Next up, Devil's Den Trail and that Famous Waterfall.
